Voodoo Swing Rockumentary

21 Jul

During Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion earlier this year, the finalists in the pin up contest got to dance in front of and on the stage before they narrowed it down to the top 5 girls. I am so glad to have been a finalist in the contest! It was so much fun and I met so many great people, I am excited for Tempe Rockabilly Reunion and next year’s Lake Havasu Reunion! Anyway, one of the bands playing that weekend was Voodoo Swing, out of Phoenix Arizona. These guys put on some seriously bad ass shows and I can’t listen to them without wanting to get my jive on. I had heard they were filming a rockumentary about Voodoo Swing at the Reunion but I, being a bit oblivious sometimes – especially when shaking my thang, didn’t know they were filming us dancing! This is such a cool video about a truly great band and I am so happy to be in it. Thank you Miss Jessadoll for showing me this!

The times I can be seen at are:
1:14 and my lovely friend and fellow pinup Kathleen Raye is in front of me,
3:00 on the right towards the back for a split second,
I am second to last in the conga line that starts at 3:05 (Kathleen is in front of me),
Shaking my bootay at 3:31
You can see my friend Jillian Danielson at 5:09 She is the one shooting Voodoo Swing and the Pinup Patriettes!

In case ya’ll had trouble spotting Kathleen and I or you just want to see pin ups in swimwear (why wouldn’t you?!), here’s a couple of photos!

Left to Right: Kathleen Raye, Melissa Misfortune, Lisa Luxe (she won second!), Nikki Napalm (this sweetheart won the Miss Congeniality award!). All of our suits are from the amazing Vintage Suits by Mary.

The finalists in the pin up contest, along with the Pinup Patriettes and the lovely and totally sweet event hostess, Brenda Lee Pinup. Photo copyright Jillian Danielson Photography.

I hope you enjoyed the video and photos! Next time Voodoo Swing is in your neck of the woods, go see ’em!

Xoxo,
Melissa

The Rev, First Friday and 4th of July Follow Up

19 Jul

Busy, busy, just plain busy. This month has flown by and while I’ve gotten a lot done, I don’t feel like I have. Since I’ve been swamped and blogging has gone by the wayside, here’s some delayed follow up to my last blog.

The First Friday Art Walk was spent hanging out at Lowbrow Art Gallery and Tattoo Studio selling my hair flowers, bows and jewelry. They will be participating in the Art Walk every month from now on and I will be there every month I can selling stuff. They are carrying some of my accessories all the time now so you can stop by there any time and pick some up. I have something awesome in the works that I will be launching there during September’s Art Walk so keep your eyes and ears peeled as I will be announcing it soon!

The Rev was as amazing as I expected and I already can’t wait to go to another show. These live photos were taken at quite a distance by me, I loooove my camera!

My boyfriend and I at the start of the show. Haha, he's always making faces and I always look like a ghost.

"Ain't no saguaros in Texas"

The 4th of July parade was fun and I’m glad I got to be part of it. We handed out flyers for Rockabilly Royale which is just around the corner on July 30th. Last year I won third in the pinup contest and this year I’m not only entering it again, I’m vending! Be sure to stop by my booth for lots of special prices, some lower than ever! Anyway, everyone had awesome outfits and here are some photos!

Before the Parade. 🙂 Left to right: Catalina, Mercedes, Miss Jessadoll, Beth, Shelia, Me and Jessa's adorable little boy.

Some of us after the parade. Left to right: Catalina, Me, Miss Jessadoll, Mercedes, Shelia

And that was just the first weekend of the month! Things have been picking up more and more lately and it doesn’t look like they will be slowing down anytime soon. Busy: just how I like it. 🙂

Upcoming events: 4th of July Weekend – Art Walk, Reverend Horton Heat and 4th of July Parade

28 Jun

If you will be in Flagstaff this Friday, July 1st, for the Art Walk, be sure to stop by Lowbrow Gallery and Tattoo Studio! They are Flagstaff’s newest custom tattoo studio, located where Hole Punch used to be. Under new ownership, the shop is new and improved! There will be lots of bad ass art on display and I will be selling my bows, flowers and jewelry so come say hi!!

After the Art Walk, join me at the Orpheum for The Reverend Horton Heat show! This will be my first time seeing The Rev live and I am so incredibly excited!

Last but not least, I will be in the 4th of July parade on Monday alongside several other local pin ups! We will be promoting Rockabilly Royale by handing out fliers and other goodies. Rockabilly Royale is on Saturday, July 30th located at Cinnabar (The Joint) in Flagstaff, Arizona. Voodoo Swing, Rooster Coupe DeVille, El Camino Royales, The Toomstoners and Shit Outta Luck are all playing! On top of the bands, there will be vendors, photographers (come get your photo taken!!), hot rods and a pin up contest! I will be vending at this event as well as participating in the pin up contest! Come on out, listen to some great music, do some shopping, have some $2 PBRs and support me in the contest! By the way, I am happy to take photos with fans so don’t be shy if you run into me!! ❤

Three Bad Jacks and Black Orchid at the Monte V – Friday May 6th!

4 May

For those of you who will be in Flagstaff this Friday for the artwalk, Birch Avenue Tattoo will be showing artwork so be sure to stop by, check out the new look to the place and say hi to the guys at the best shop in town! When you are done with the artwalk, stop by the Monte Vista lounge for a great rockabilly band, Three Bad Jacks as well as a great metal band, Black Orchid. It’s sure to be a great show with some bad ass rockabilly guys playing flaming instruments! If you see me out, feel free to say hi, I don’t bite. ❤

Ps, To those of you going to The Meteors show, have fun!! I’m bummed I am unable to make it to that one but Three Bad Jacks and Black Orchid are always great! 🙂

Missing Viva

22 Apr

Viva Las Vegas is this weekend and I am so sad to be missing it! 😦 Last year was so much fun and it breaks my heart to be missing Jerry Lee Lewis this year. I’m also missing Elvira at the car show, amazing burlesque artists, the fashion show, tiki pool parties and tons of other awesome stuff. Sigh… There is always next year and I can’t wait to see who will be on the lineup next time around. Instead of being in Vegas, I am treating myself to some new music and finishing getting some outfits together for upcoming shoots. While on the hunt for great clothes, I found some websites with gorgeous lace girdles and other vintage style lingerie so expect some hot new photos in the next couple of months. 😉

The soundtrack to my weekend includes:

The Peacocks ❤

Hotrod Hillbillies

The Moonlight Howlers (of course!)

Hope you all have a great weekend whether you are at Viva or not!
Xoxo,
Melissa

Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion 2011 (better late than never!)

22 Apr

Oh wow! I haven’t posted in a while! So, to pick up where I left off, Rockabilly Reunion in February was a ton of fun! (Read on, there are photos…) It was amazing that the Rockabilly Hall of Fame came out to cover the event since it is a smaller weekender. It may be smaller but it’s growing fast and I definitely see why they came out! The music was fantastic of course, I met so many great people, drooled over the cars, hung out with the lovely Kathleen Raye and entering the pinup contest was totally worth it. I didn’t win but I was a finalist, pretty good for my second contest ever! 😉 Congrats to Maritza Martini, Lisa Luxe and Maybelle Lee, you were all so sweet and looked flawless all weekend!

Booze Bombs were fantastic, just as I expected, and I am so happy they came all the way from Germany to play. Despite having seen photos and videos of Cash’d Out, I couldn’t get over how much he truly looked like him on stage. Not to mention, it sounded like we were listening to Johnny and June themselves. It was the last show High Rollers are ever playing, sad but what a way to go out!  Voodoo Swing, Rooster Coupe Deville, Deadbeat Daddies (haha, I love that name) and Bastard Whinos were all bands I had heard but hadn’t seen play before, they were all great live! Three Bad Jacks were bad ass as always and I’m looking forward to their show next month. How can a band that lights their instruments on fire not be bad ass? Last but certainly not least, The Moonlight Howlers killed it! Based out of Williams Arizona, this band should not be missed! If you get a chance to see them, do! They are all so talented, nice and Ariel (she is the drummer and sings too) always has amazing hair and flawless outfits. She is such a doll too!

While there, I shot with Cherry Club Photography and I am glad I did! They were fun, nice and professional. I am excited to shoot with them again. To see more of the photos we did, add me on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/melissa.misfortune

The vendors were great too. I got my new favorite jacket from Red Devil Clothing (I wear that thing everywhere and get tons of compliments on it), some kick ass Sourpuss and Rock Rebel stuff and got to meet Mary, the genius designer behind Vintage Suits by Mary! I looooooove her designs, they are so feminine, cute and sexy; I have my eye on so many of her suits! I feel great every time I put on the polka dot playsuit I got at the Reunion. It has a metal zipper, an adjustable strap done in the true vintage style (with buttons) and it has boning! Like I said, she’s a swimsuit genius.

Below are just a few candids and photos of the event (as well as the photos by Cherry Club Photography because wordpress is being lame), there are way too many to post here!

Three More Days Until Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion!

15 Feb

With so many great events just around the corner, how does a girl find time to sit down and crack open a good book? Well, I guess the next book in the Dexter series will just have to wait a little bit longer…

Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion is just three short days away! My stomach is filled to the brim with butterflies over this weekend. I can’t wait to see one of my favorite bands, Three Bad Jacks live again as well as Mad Max and the Wild Ones and The Moonlight Howlers. On top of all of the great bands, vendors, the car show with 400+ cars, the carnival and the after parties, I am excited to be shooting with Cherry Club Photography and I hope to see you all there supporting me in the pin-up contest! If you’re in Havasu this weekend and have nothing to do, come on out! The whole weekend costs just $10, yes TEN DOLLARS, to attend and is sure to be a great weekend surrounded by great company.

Once I get back from Rockabilly Reunion, I have more photo shoots planned and 6 weeks to get ready to vend at the Lake Havasu Tattoo Show which is April 1st, 2nd and 3rd. There are so many new products, both finished and in the works that we are dying to share with you guys! I will be posting photos and putting things up for sale as soon as my new camera gets delivered.

Oh and one more thing, if you see me at the Reunion this weekend, at the tattoo convention in April or at any other events, come say hi! I promise I don’t bite. 🙂

As the water grinds the stone, we rise and fall

24 Jan

There is so much more than meets the eye when it comes to me. I am composed of intricate and diverse tastes from so many influences it would be hard to name them all in one post, if it were even possible to name them all. Underneath my pin-up, retro, cheesecake exterior lies a heart that not only beats for rockabilly, it beats strongly for industrial and goth as well.

I have always found the beats, the dramatic, delicious vocals and overall feel of Covenant’s music infectious, something about it resonates deep within me and the desire to listen to them more resembles a need. After 10 years of listening, my love for them and the way they make me feel continues to grow.

This one won’t play on WordPress but the music video and song are well worth watching. (This is the one I really want to share with you)

This song is another all time favorite of mine and it often works its way into my daily life. Whether I am styling my hair, doing dishes, working on my clothing company or just vegging, this song is often playing. Oh how I wish they made more videos!
